The Persea mite , O. perseae View in CoL , was detected on Madeira Island in 2005 associated with avocado ( Persea americana View in CoL ), grapes ( V. vinifera View in CoL ), European plum ( P. domestica View in CoL ) and the ornamentals Wisteria sinensis View in CoL and Bauhinia variegata ( Ferreira et al. 2006) View in CoL . In 2006, it was found in the Algarve (mainland Portugal), associated mainly with avocado (Hass, Reed and Bacon cultivars), but also with carob trees ( Ceratonia siliqua View in CoL ), Sweet cherry ( Prunus avium View in CoL ), Persimmon ( Diospyros kaki View in CoL ), common Walnut ( Juglans regia View in CoL ) and grapes ( Ferreira et al. 2007), being included in the INIAV collection. In 2020, O. perseae View in CoL was found causing significant damage to avocado in the Óbidos region, centre Portugal, suggesting a significant northern extension of its known distribution range.
