2151. Bridled Tern Onychoprion anaethetus (Scopoli, 1786) View in CoL

In 1825, Stanley listed an unsexed specimen as ‘Panyan Tern’ and ‘ Sterna Panay [sic]’. Listed as ‘ Sterna panayensis? Gmel. [sic]’ȱ byȱ Rafflesȱ (1822),ȱ butȱ theȱ descriptionȱ clearlyȱ involvesȱ Bridled Tern (= Onychoprion anaethetus ) which is resident in western Sumatra ( van Marle & Voous 1988). The species was listed as ‘ Sterna Panayensis Gmel. [sic]’ȱbyȱVigorsȱ(Rafflesȱ 1830). Lack of a traceable specimen in NML, or a number in Moore’s stock books, suggests it was not part of the 1851 bequest.
