Type species: Gryllacris podocausta De Haan, 1842

Diagnosis. Rather small to medium sized species with wings that cover about the abdomen and reach or little surpass the hind knees. The genus is characterized by the male ninth abdominal tergite being globular with the apical area split in midline by a narrow membranous zone. On both sides of that zone there is a long oval swelling that carries at ventral margin a short, acute tooth. For the type species of the genus, C. podocausta , five subspecies are currently recognized, three of them from Java that are in need of revision. Some species of Caustogryllacris are very similar to species of Prosopogryllacris . They differ by the strong swellings of the male ninth abdominal tergite that carry at tip short subacute teeth while in Prosopogryllacris the ninth tergite is provided with a pair of often upcurved, styliform projections.
