Type locality. Not stated.

Material examined. None. Only the name label 'cynosbatella'.

Identity. Notocelia cynosbatella ( Linnaeus, 1758) ( Olethreutinae , Eucosmini ).

Remarks. As is the case with many combinations for the Linnean name cynosbatella , the Fabrician name appears in the literature with many confused identities (see especially Haworth 1811; Hübner 1825; Lederer 1859; Duponchel 1835). Most of the taxa associated with this name are supposed synonyms of species presently assigned to Notocelia , Spilonota , and Hedya , presumably due to their superficial similarity. It is clear, however, that the Fabricius name is merely an unjustified emendation of Phalaena cynosbatella Linnaeus , and it has been treated as such in contemporary literature (e.g., Brown 2005).
