scientific name

Pyralis approximana
status

approximana Fabricius, 1798

Pyralis approximana Fabricius, 1798: 478 .

Type locality. Germany, Saxony (“Habitat Halae Saxonum Dom. Hybner”).

Material examined. None.

Identity. Acleris ferrugana ( Denis and Schiffermüller, 1775) ( Tortricinae , Tortricini ).

Remarks. The identity of this species has been controversial in the literature. Together with Pyralis centrana F., 1794, it was long considered a doubtful synonym of Acleris notana (Donovan, 1806) . However, Speidel and Aarvik (2002) contributed convincing evidence that it is a synonym of A. ferrugana , not A. notana ; and this was followed by Brown (2005).
