scientific name

Pyralis allionana
status

allionana Fabricius, 1794

Pyralis allionana Fabricius, 1794: 262 .

Type locality. Italy (“Habitat in Italia Dr. Allioni”).

Material examined. None.

Identity. Aethes decimana ( Denis and Schiffermüller, 1775) ( Tortricinae , Cochylini ) ( Herrich-Schäffer 1856).

Remarks. This synonym has been overlooked by previous authors, and there is no reference in tortricid literature to this name. There is a Phalaena allioniana described by Villers (1789: 426) that has been considered a synonym of Aethes hartmanniana (Clerck, 1759) . Perhaps this was an unjustified emendation (or misspelling) of Villers’ name. Apparently both names are dedicated to Allioni but there is no cross-reference in Fabricius and Villers publications. Herrich-Schäffer (1856 (4): 3) listed this name as “( allionana ) F. v. decimana ”, meaning that he considered Pyralis allionana Fabricius a variation of Aethes decimana ( Denis and Schiffermüller, 1775) and this is the interpretation we propose to follow.
