Pyralis leeana
status

leeana Fabricius, 1776

Pyralis leeana Fabricius, 1776: 292 (non 1781).

Type locality. Germany, Hamburg (“Habitat Hamburgi Dr. Schulz”).

Material examined. None.

Identity. Ancylis apicella ( Denis and Schiffermüller, 1775) ( Olethreutinae , Enarmoniini ).

Remarks. According to Beccaloni et al. (2005), leeana is a synonym of Ancylis apicella , and this treatment was followed by Brown (2005). However, P. leeana F., 1776 is a senior primary homonym of P. leeana F., 1781, misspelled as lecana by Fabricius (1787), and this has been the source of considerable confusion. According to Werneburg (1864: 538) and Leraut (1997: 225), Pyralis leeana F., 1781 is a synonym of Rivula sericialis ( Denis and Schiffermüller, 1775) (Erebidae) , which is probably a correct interpretation (see also Appendix 1).
