Figures 1 View FIGURE 1 R, 2R
Pyralis rivellana Fabricius, 1775: 654 ; 1781: 287; 1787: 237; 1794: 280.
Type locality. Sweden (“Habitat in Sueciae nemoribus”).
Material examined. Kiel coll. 2 syntypes, representing 2 species: 1 Syricoris rivulana (Scopoli, 1763) (lectotype here designated) and 1 (perhaps) Tortrix undulana ( Denis and Schiffermüller, 1775) .
Identity. Syricoris rivulana (Scopoli, 1763) ( Olethreutinae , Olethreutini ).
Remarks. Fabricius did not refer to Scopoli in his description, but this name simply could have been an unjustified emendation or misspelling of Scopoli’s name. Werneburg (1864) discussed the possibility of an alternative synonymy with Tortrix undulana (Denis and Schiffermüller) , to which Fabricius (1787) refers. There is no agreement among subsequent authors, and Brown (2005) does not even include this name. In order to stabilize the nomenclature, the specimen figured in Figure 1 View FIGURE 1 R is here designated as the lectotype. It is a poorly preserved specimen with a label in Fabricius’ handwriting ( Figure 2 View FIGURE 2 R) - it is difficult to read “[r]ivularis”. Although the specific identity of Scopoli’s Phalaena rivulana is stable, the species belongs in a taxonomically unstable area in which the generic assignments of many species are uncertain. Kuznetsov (1978) used rivulana in combination with Syricoris Treitschke, 1829 , and this has been followed by many authors (e.g., Razowski 2003, Brown 2005). However, Aarvik (2011) places it in Celypha Hübner, 1825 .
