Stipules 4–7 × 1–2 mm, lanceolate, not auriculate, not amplexicaul, inserted obliquely at the base of the leaf petiole, free from each other, apex caudate, margin straight, sparsely or densely tomentose or villose, rarely glabrescent, veins slightly conspicuous, persistent. Leaves unifoliolate; petiole 7–14 mm long, cylindrical, sulcate, densely villose or tomentose; stipels 2–3 mm long, subulate, margin straight, velutinous on the outer surface, persistent; leaflets discolorous, chartaceous, venation brochidodromous, primary and secondary veins prominent, tertiary veins flush with the abaxial surface, indumentum densely velutinous on the primary, secondary and tertiary veins on the abaxial surface, adaxial surface glabrescent, uncinate hairs covering both surfaces, leaflet 2.5–4.3 × 1.8–2.8 cm, elliptic or oblong, base cordate or obtuse, apex retuse, obtuse or subacute. Inflorescence a terminal or axillary pseudoraceme; the main axis shorter than the adjacent leaves, 1.5–4 cm long, densely hirsute, 2 flowers per node; primary bract 6–7 mm long, ovate, margin straight, hirsute on the outer surface, caducous, veins inconspicuous on the outer surface; secondary bract 3–3.5 mm long, linear, margin straight, hirsute on the outer surface, caducous, veins inconspicuous on the outer surface; pedicel 9–11 mm long, densely uncinate. Flowers 4–5 mm long; calyx 5–laciniate, tube campanulate, 1–1.5 mm long, hirsute on the outer surface; teeth subequal, triangular, 4–5 mm long; corolla lilac, standard 5–6 × 6–7 mm, orbicular, apex obtuse, maculate at the base, claw 0.8–1 mm long; wing petals 5–5.5 × 2–2.5 mm, oblong, apex obtuse, without callosities, claw 0.8–1 mm long; keel petals 4–5 × 1–1.5 mm, narrow obovate, apex subacute, with callosities, claw 1–2 mm long; androecium diadelphous, 4–5 mm long, vexillary stamen free; ovary 2–2.5 mm long, densely velutinous, stipe ca. 1 mm long, glabrous. Distribution and Ecology:— Brazil, in areas of Cerrado vegetation and in the Amazonian biome in the States of Amazonas, Goiás, Mato Grosso, and Rondônia.

Conservation Assessment:— Least Concern (LC), not endangered ( IUCN 2001).

Phenology:— flowering and fruiting from May to February.

Etymology:— a reference to the toponym, the River Juruena, where the species was collected by Hoehne, the author of the binomial.

Common Name:— barbadinho.

Taxonomic notes:— the congested pseudoracemose inflorescence, and hirsute calyces help to distinguish this species from others with unifoliolate leaves occurring in Brazil. Among the trifoliolate species it is similar to Desmodium barbatum in its congested inflorescence and hirsute calyces.

Azevedo (1981), based on literature only suggested Desmodium barbatum subsp. saulierei (Schindl.) H. Ohashi (1973) as a probable synonym of D. juruenense , even though the former is restricted to southeastern Asia. Examination of the type material of the two taxa confirmed a number of morphological similarities, including the unifoliolate and oblong leaflets, the congested inflorescences, hirsute calyces, and loments with obovate-depressed articles. In addition, both taxa have a preference for humid forest habitats. Neither taxon has a wide distribution, nor are they ruderal unlike many species of the genus. Nevertheless, despite the morphological and ecological similarities, the synonymisation of D. barbatum subsp. saulierei with D. juruenense is not followed here, pending further study.
