Type Locality: Venezuela, Montañas de la Pedregosa near Mérida, 2500 m.
Vernacular Names: Frosted Hairy Dwarf Porcupine.
Distribution: C and N Colombia and W and N Venezuela.
Discussion: Included in vestitus by Cabrera (1961), Concepcion and Molinari (1991), Woods (1993), and Soriano and Ochoa (1997), but see Voss and da Silva (2001) for a discussion of the morphological distinctiveness of these two taxa. Assigned to vestitus group based on presence of bristle-quills ( Voss and da Silva, 2001). Karyotype has 2n=42 and FN=76 (Concepción and Molinari, 1991).
