Peckia (Euboettcheria) santamariae n. sp.

( Figs. 23, 24 View FIGURES 22–30. 22 )

Description. Male. Length. 13.1 mm. Head. Ocellar setae stronger than postoculars. Outer vertical seta stronger than postoculars. Orbital setae black. Three frontal setae situated below the dorsal limit of the lunule in lateral view.

All genal setae black. First two rows of occipital setae black, others yellow. Thorax. Chaetotaxy: acrostichals = 0 + 1, dorsocentrals = 0 + 3 (anterior one shorter), intra-alars = 2 + 2 (anterior one shorter), supra-alars = 2 + 3, basal scutellars = 4. Prosternum and posterior surface of hind coxa with black setae. Three katepisternal setae. Postalar wall with only black setae. Lower calypter with a central dark spot and a fringe of long hair-like setae along outer margin, extending almost to its posterior margin. Mid femur with a ctenidium. Antero-dorsal surface of mid tibia with a median seta and 1 apical seta. One row of setae on ventral surface of hind femur. Hind tibia antero-dorsally with 1 seta in the basal third, 1 in the middle third and 1 preapical. Abdomen. Postero-ventral seams between T3/ T4 and T4/T5 parallel. T5 with golden microtrichosity. Abdomen with grey and golden microtrichosity in lateral view. ST1+3 with only black setae. Two lateral setae on each side of T4. Terminalia. ST5 orange. Medial margin of ST5 ∩-shaped. Inner margins of ST5 arms convex, with a patch of short setae on the median region. Posterior region of ST5 arms bent ventrally. Syntergosternite 7+8 longer than high in lateral view, orange, with golden microtrichosity. Epandrium bright orange. Cercus orange proximally and brown or dark brown distally. Cercus in lateral view progressively narrowing towards the apex, with the dorsal margin curved, and an acute apex. Dorsal surface of cercus with both robust setae and hair-like setae on the distal half. Surstylus orange, finger-shaped with anterior margin slightly projected towards the anterior body region, with a rounded apex. Pregonite tongue-shaped, with an apical incision, a lateral projection, a rounded apex, and curved in lateral view. Postgonite elongated, with a hooked apex. Basi- and distiphallus connected by a desclerotized strip. Juxta without demarcated connection with the phallic tube. Juxta sclerotized and composed of one long plate without juxtal lateral plate and juxtal horns. Juxta with the lateral edges folded ventrally, resembling a tube narrowed towards the apex. Juxta with apex strongly angled ventrally in lateral view. Distiphallus with a pair of lateral styli separated, each with a longitudinal cleft. Short vesica composed of one entire plate without demarcated connection with the distiphallus, with an acute apex.

Female. Unknown.

Variable features. The following differences were observed in the type series as compared with the holotype: Four frontal setae situated below the dorsal limit of the lunule in lateral view. Lower calypter completely infuscated. Antero-dorsal surface of hind tibia with 2 setae in the basal third, 1 in the middle third and 1 preapical on antero-dorsal surface. Abdomen laterally with only golden microtrichosity. Three lateral setae on each side of T4.

Taxonomic remarks. The shape of pregonite is similar to Peckia (Euboettcheria) anguilla , but the lateral curvature is stronger in P. (Euboettcheria) santamariae . The cercus of this new species is similar to that of both P. (Euboettcheria) anguilla and P. (Euboettcheria) asinoma , but is more flattened in lateral view.

Biology. Colombian material was collected on decomposed fish. The collecting site is a tropical wet secondary forest, ranging from 843 to 1285m altitude, 24° C average temperature and annual rainfall of 4740 mm.

Distribution. NEOTROPICAL— Bolivia (La Paz), Colombia (Boyacá).

Etymology. The specific epithet “ santamariae ” is a feminine genitive and refers to the locality Santa María (Boyacá, Colombia), where part of the type series was collected.
