( Figs. 43, 44 View FIGURES 41–53. 41–42 ) (fig. 16 in Aldrich 1916, figs. 32, 39, 53, 73 in Lopes 1958)

Sarcophaga volucris Wulp, 1895: 269 View in CoL . Mexico, Vera Cruz, Atoyac. Lectotype male, by present designation, in BMNH.

Description. Male. Head. Ocellar setae stronger than postoculars. Outer vertical seta stronger than postoculars. Black orbital setae. Three frontal setae situated below the dorsal limit of the lunule. Genal setae black anteriorly, yellow or white posteriorly. First two rows of occipital setae black, others yellow. Thorax. Chaetotaxy: acrostichals = 0 + 1, dorsocentrals = 0 + 3 (anterior one shorter), intra-alars = 2 + 2 (anterior one shorter), supraalars = 2 + 3, basal scutellars = 4. Prosternum and posterior surface of hind coxa with black setae. Three katepisternal setae. Postalar wall with only black setae. Lower calypter with a central dark spot and a fringe of long hair-like setae along outer margin, extending almost to its posterior margin. Mid femur with a ctenidium. Anterodorsal surface of mid tibia with 1 median and 1 apical seta. Ventral surface of hind femur with 2 rows of setae. Hind tibia antero-dorsally with 1 seta in the basal third, 1 in the middle third and 1 preapical. Abdomen. Postero-ventral seams between T3/T4 and T4/T5 parallel. Microtrichosity of the abdomen laterally golden. ST1+3 with only black hair-like setae. Two lateral setae on each side of T4. T5 with golden microtrichosity. Terminalia. ST5 orange. Medial margin of ST5 ∩-shaped. Inner margins of ST5 arms convex, with acute apophyses anteriorly. Syntergosternite 7+8 longer than high in lateral view, orange, with golden microtrichosity. Epandrium bright orange. Cercus orange proximally and brown or dark brown distally. Cercal base with enlarged and rounded lobes, its thickness in lateral view becoming progressively reduced towards the apex. Cercus strongly curved with many short, robust setae on the distal half. Cercal apex hooked. Surstylus orange, finger-shaped with anterior margin slightly projected towards the anterior body region, and an acute apex. Pregonite tongue-shaped, curved with the proximal region wide in lateral view, with a lateral projection, and an acute apex. Postgonite elongated, with a hooked apex. Basi- and distiphallus connected by a desclerotized strip. Juxta without demarcated connection with the phallic tube. Juxta sclerotized and composed of one long plate without juxtal lateral plate and juxtal horns. Juxta curved with the lateral edges folded ventrally, resembling a tube narrowed towards the apex. Distiphallus with a pair of lateral styli separated, each with a longitudinal cleft. Short vesica composed of one entire plate without demarcated connection with the distiphallus, which is bilobed distally and less sclerotized than the remaining proximal surface.

Variable features. Outer vertical seta of same size as postoculars. Six frontal setae situated below the dorsal limit of the lunule on the left side, and 4 or 5 on the right side.

Taxonomic remarks. We examined 2 male syntypes of Sarcophaga volucris Wulp, 1895 deposited in BMNH. Both are double-mounted and in good condition. One specimen carries five labels: “Syn-type”, “Co-type” [with the male terminalia glued to label], “Teapa, Tabasco., Jan. H. H. S.”, “B. C. A. Dipt. II, Sarcophaga , ♂ volucris v d w”, and “Central America, Pres. By, F. D. Godman., O. Salvin., 1903-172” (last line of the fourth label handwritten, the others printed). The other specimen carries six labels: “Syn-type”, “Co-type” with the male terminalia coated, “Atoyac, Vera Cruz., April. H. H. S.”, “Central America, Pres. By, F. D. Godman., O. Salvin., 1903-172”, “B. C. A. Dipt. II, Sarcophaga , ♂ volucris v d w”, and “not volucris” (last line of the fifth label and the sixth label handwritten, the others printed). Two specimens from Mexico are mentioned in the original description by Wulp (1895), one from Amula in Guerrero and another from Teapa in Tabasco. Although one specimen is from Atoyac, we suppose this is part of the original type series, because the label with the identification is handwritten by Wulp and it evidently was part of the material on which Wulp based his Centrali-Americana treatment. Aldrich (1916) revised both syntypes and pointed out that the male from Teapa was “ occipitalis Thomson ” (= Peckia intermutans [ Walker, 1861]), while only the one from Atoyac was volucris Wulp, 1895 as currently interpreted. Although Aldrich (1916) acknowledged the erroneous identification, either he or a subsequent curator/researcher appears to have confused the labels and left a handwritten label with “not volucris” below the specimen belonging to Sarcophaga volucris Wulp, 1895 from Atoyac and not the specimen of “ occipitalis Thomson ” from Teapa. The specimens are not conspecific, and the one from Teapa (Tabasco, Mexico) belongs to Peckia intermutans ( Walker, 1861) . Only the one from Atoyac with the handwritten label “not volucris” actually belongs to Sarcophaga volucris Wulp, 1885 (as here defined), and we herewith select and designate this male as lectotype to have an exemplar name-bearing type to better serve nomenclatural stability. The specimen selected as lectotype of Sarcophaga volucris Wulp, 1895 is in good condition, with terminalia extended, and it carries the five labels mentioned above. We have equipped the specimen with an additional, red, printed label with “ LECTOTYPE ♂ Sarcophaga volucris Wulp, 1895 Buenaventura & Pape det.”.
