Type:— BRAZIL. Pará : s. loc., ex hort., leg. 1839, fl. cult. spring 1841, S. Dickenson sub G. Baker s.n. (not found). Neotype (designated here):— BRAZIL. Pará : Marajó Island , Retiro Grande village , Gurupatuba farm, Arari Falls , 20 July 2023, D. S. Ferreira & E. G. Nascimento 140 ( MG 248342 !).

Notes: — Westcott (1841) described N. laxiflora on the basis of a plant of the same species sent by Dickenson from the state of Pará in Brazil to George Barker in London, and the species bloomed during the spring. In the protologue, Westcott did not designate a type specimen to serve as a holotype or where the deposit occurred. Apparently, he only described the species without herborizing any samples, opting to keep the specimen alive in his garden. During a visit to Barker’s garden, it is believed that Westcott checked the flowering specimen and, based on this same specimen already used by Lindley to describe N. aromatica , described N. laxiflora . Since there is no illustration available in the protologue nor a specimen available in an herbarium, a neotype is required. We chose a specimen from the same region and one that corresponds to the concept of N. laxiflora to serve as the type specimen for that name.
