Georgus Gómez, 2018 [J. Nat. Hist., 52(41–42): 2615–2616] (Crustacea: Copepoda : Harpacticoida : Argestidae ) preoccupied by Georgus Thiele, 1893 [Geb. Sch. Beg. natür. Class., 2: 366] (Mollusca: Polyplacophora : Chitonida : Chitonidae ), syn. Rhyssoplax Thiele, 1893 [Geb. Sch. Beg. natür. Class., 2: 368] (Mollusca: Polyplacophora : Chitonida : Chitonidae ).

Remarks. Thiele (1893: 367–368) proposed the genus Georgus for two species formerly placed in the genus Chiton Linnaeus, 1758 ( Polyplacophora: Chitonida ), G. rusticus ( Deshayes, 1863) and G. nigrovirescens ( Blainville, 1825) . Some years later, Thiele (1909) synonymised these two species with C. angusticostatus Quoy & Gaimard, 1835 which was subsequently synonymised with C. mauritianus Quoy & Gaimard, 1835 by Dupuis (1918). Van Belle (1983) regarded the genus Rhyssoplax proposed by Thiele (1893), as a subgenus of Chiton , but O’Neill (1989) gave Rhyssoplax full genus status. Bullock (1988a) noted that many chitonid species from the Old World placed in the genus Chiton probably belong in Rhyssoplax , and Bullock (1988b) reallocated C. nigrovirescens into Radsia Gray 1847 . At present, C. mauritianus (= G. rusticus) is accepted as R. mauritiana ( Quoy & Gaimard, 1835) , and the chitonid genus Georgus is currently regarded as a junior subjective synonym of Rhyssoplax (MolluscaBase eds. 2024). Despite its status, the chitonid genus Georgus remains available irrespective of its invalidity as a junior synonym ( ICZN 1999, Art. 10.6).

Gómez (2018) proposed the genus name Georgus for Bodinia peterrumi George, 2004 (Crustacea: Copepoda: Harpacticoida : Argestidae ) and entered homonymy with the chitonid genus name Georgus . Since the chitonid genus name Georgus ( Polyplacophora) remains available (see above), a new replacement name for the argestid genus name Georgus ( Copepoda) is required.

Here I propose the new replacement name, Kaius nom. nov., as intentionally new for Georgus Gómez, 2018 ( Copepoda: Harpacticoida : Argestidae ) ( ICZN 1999, Art. 16.1).

The prior nominal taxon, Georgus Gómez, 2018 and the new replacement name Kaius nom. nov., proposed herein, have the same type species, Bodinia peterrumi George, 2004 ) [= Georgus peterrumi ( George, 2004) ] ( ICZN 1999, Art. 67.8), and should be referred to as Kaius peterrumi ( George, 2004) comb. nov. The generic diagnosis of Kaius nom. nov. is the same as for the prior nominal taxon, Georgus Gómez, 2018 , and is as in Gómez (2018: 2615–2616) ( ICZN 1999, Art. 13.3).

Etymology. The new replacement name, Kaius nom. nov., is dedicated to Dr Kai Horst George for his contribution to the knowledge of the Argestidae .
