Type species: Polypedilum pelostolum Kieffer, 1912 (= Chironomus nubifer Skuse, 1889 ), by subsequent designation of Ashe (1981: 58).

Diagnosis. As in Pinder and Reiss (1983, 1986), Cranston et al. (1989), and Saether (1977). The diagnoses can be emended in several minor aspects based on newer revisions and descriptions especially in Oyewo and Saether (1998), Saether and Sundal (1999), Vårdal et al. (2002), and Zhang and Wang (2004). However, several other groups of the genus still remain to be revised and a more complete diagnosis should be postponed.

Systematics. A preliminary phylogenetic analysis of the genus as a whole with keys to subgenera and species groups is presented in Saether and Sundal (1999). The subgenus Uresipedilum is shown probably to form the sister group of all the other subgenera within the genus Polypedilum .
