Polypedilum (Pentapedilum) unagitertium (Sasa) View in CoL comb. n.
( Figs 38G, H)
Pentapedilum unagitertium Sasa, 1985: 40 View in CoL ; Sasa (1994: 33).
Material examined. JAPAN: Kagoshima Prefecture, Kagoshima, Lake Unagiike , holotype male, 22.x.1993 ,
M. Sasa ( NMST Type No. 261: 24) .
Diagnostic characters. The species is characterized by having numerous macrotrichia on the wing, banded abdomen, foretibial scale sharply pointed, but without spur, and base of superior volsella covered with microtrichia and with 4 inner setae. It resembles P. (Pe.) furudosecundum which, however, lacks seta on the projection of the superior volsella and often has 2 apical setae on the inferior volsella.
Male (n = 1)
Total length not measurable. Wing length 2.05 mm. Wing length / length of profemur 2.23. Ground color yellow; thorax brown at postnotum, antepronotum, preepisternum, and scutum or almost completely brown; abdominal segments banded, anterior 3/4 brown with yellow posterior apices; femur, tibia, and tarsi pale brown.
Head. AR 1.89. Ultimate flagellomere 800 µm long. Temporal setae 12 including 6 inner verticals, 6 outer verticals, and 2 postorbitals. Clypeus with 30 setae. Tentorium 165 µm long. Stipes 189 µm long. Palpomere lengths (in µm): 58, 49, 165, 154, 231. Fifth palpomere / third palpomere 1.39.
Thorax. Acrostichals 16, dorsocentrals 29, prealars 9. Scutellum with 19 setae.
Wing. Anal lobe developed. VR 1.05. Brachiolum with 6 setae. Cells r 4+5, m 1+2, m 3+4, cell m basal of RM, cu plus an with dense macrotrichia, obscuring veins. Squama with 15 setae.
Legs. Scale on foretibia 47 µm long, with 16 µm long spur. Spurs on midtibia 55 µm long, on hind tibia 62 µm long. Comb on midtibia 26 µm long, combs on hind tibia 26 µm and 23 µm long. Width at apex of foretibia 68 µm, of midtibia 75 µm, of hind tibia 78 µm. Length and proportions of legs as in Table 52.
Hypopygium ( Fig. 38G). Tergite IX with 14 median setae, laterosternite IX with 5 setae. Anal point 117 µm long, slender, 20 µm wide at base, tapering to 5 µm at apex. Transverse sternapodeme 72 µm long; phallapodeme 89 µm long. Gonocoxite 191 µm long. Superior volsella ( Fig. 38H) 100 µm long, base with microtrichia and 4 inner setae, projection with 1 dorsolateral seta. Inferior volsella 119 µm long, nearly parallelsided, slightly broader subapically, with 1 prominent apical seta. Gonostylus very broad, 178 µm long. HR 1.07.
Remarks. The hypopygium is inaccurately illustrated by Sasa (1985).
