Trichosanthes anguina Linnaeus View in CoL , Species Plantarum 2: 1008. 1753.
"Habitat in China." RCN: 7309.
Lectotype (Jeffrey in Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 95. 1993): [icon] "Anguina Sinensis, flore albo, elegantissimo, capillamentis tenuissimis ornato, fructu longo intorto, sub initium ex albo, & viridi variegato, per maturitatem prorsus rubro" in Micheli, Nov. Pl. Gen.: 12, t. 9. 1729 (see also p. 59).
Generitype of Trichosanthes Linnaeus (vide Green, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 190. 1929).
Current name: Trichosanthes cucumerina L. View in CoL ( Cucurbitaceae ).
Note: Keraudren-Aymonin (in Aubréville & Leroy, Fl. Cambodge Laos Viêt-Nam 15: 90. 1975) indicated cultivated material (presumably sheet 1149.1) in LINN as type but it lacks a Species Plantarum number (i.e. “1”) and is a later addition to the herbarium, and not original material for the name. Jeffrey (in Kew Bull. 34: 797. 1980) designated the polynomial from Linnaeus’ Hortus Cliffortianus account as the lectotype, but this is contrary to Art. 8.1.
