Type Locality: Brazil, Ipanema, São Paulo.

Vernacular Names: Black Lion Tamarin.

Synonyms: Leontopithecus ater ( Lesson 1840) .

Distribution: Brazil, São Paulo region.

Conservation: CITES – Appendix I; U.S. ESA – Endangered; IUCN – Critically Endangered.

Discussion: Recognized as a full species by Rosenberger and Coimbra-Filho (1984).
