- Male with three stout spines on its foretarsomere 5. This feature is unique in the Culicomorpha. However, some
Probezzia have a single stout spine and some Macropeza have a somewhat stronger seta. These are likely non-
homologous to those in Austrosphaeromias . - Female with abdominal sternite 8 with anteromedial cluster of stout setae. This feature is nearly unique in the
Culicomorpha but is approximated by some Neotropical Palpomyia in the distincta group, which have well developed additional lobes ( Spinelli et al. 2009b), absent in Austrosphaeromias ( Spinelli et al. 2015) .
