- The female wing is uniquely modified, with an apical indentation and associated large, stout setae. This apomorphy was discussed by Borkent (1995: character 41).
- The male mid- and hind legs with strong, curved, pale spines on midtarsomere 2 and hind tarsomeres 2–3. This feature is unique in the Culicomorpha.
- Gonocoxal apodemes fused medially. This feature is uncertain. Wirth & Grogan (1988) describe the parameres “with a V-shaped basal connective and a pair of arcuate bladelike sclerites”. The base of the parameres is articulated with the base of the gonocoxite (based on their drawing and that by de Meillon (1937)), and the “Vshaped basal connective” appears likely to be fused gonocoxal apodemes. This configuration of the parameres and gonocoxal apodemes is unique within the family.
