Type Locality: "Port Natal" [Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa].
Vernacular Names: Natal Red Rock Hare.

Subspecies Pronolagus crassicaudatus subsp. crassicaudatus I. Geoffroy 1832
Subspecies Pronolagus crassicaudatus subsp. ruddi Thomas and Schwann 1905
Distribution: SE South Africa; extreme S Mozambique.
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Formerly included randensis , see Lundholm (1955 a). The relationship of crassicaudatus and randensis is unclear, see Petter (1972 b:6). Distribution allopatric to that of randensis , but sympatric in western half of range with rupestris .
