Costa (1829, fig. 3 in plate VI) illustrated an insect on plate VI figure 3 and in an explanation of the figure on page 23 he called it "Dattilopio elioide", a vernacular name, meaning "sun-like Dactylopius ". Signoret (1877: 614) cited Costa's illustration and named the species Coccus elioides Signoret , thus validating the name without indicating its identity except that it resembled a species of Asterolecanium auctorum or Acanthochermes of Kollar. Current status: the name Coccus elioides refers to an unrecognisable species.
