Key to the species of Oiovelia View in CoL

Modified from Rodrigues et al. (2014)

Note: Species of this genus commonly have variations in some diagnostic morphological characters ( Rodrigues et al. 2014). In some cases, females have to be identified by association with males. Furthermore, it is possible to collect two or more species in the same foam mass; thus, the separation and identification of the specimens must be done carefully.

1. Head, legs and pronotum creamy yellow in apterous form ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 I); pronotum brown on anterior lobe in some macropterous specimens ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 A, C); male proctiger with a small conical process on half of dorsal surface; paramere wide at base, tapering distally, with hook-like apex ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 E)................................... Oiovelia spumicola Spangler ( Venezuela) View in CoL

- Head, legs and pronotum orange, reddish brown, orange brown or blackish in apterous and macropterous forms ( Figs. 4 View FIGURE 4 A–H); male proctiger without small conical process on dorsal surface (as in figs. 2D, F); apex of paramere rounded or truncate, not hook-like ( Figs. 2 View FIGURE 2 D, F, G–N)........................................................................... 2

2. Posterior lobe of pronotum with an evident whitish pruinose area, generally V-shaped ( Figs. 4 View FIGURE 4 A, C, G, H).............. 3

- Pruinose area on posterior lobe of pronotum, if present, with irregular form and not so evident ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 , 4 View FIGURE 4 B, D–F)........ 6

3. Forewing with uniform and faint whitish pruinosity covering the entire surface, at most absent on a small portion below basal macula ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 H); paramere narrowed medially and distinctly widening to apex ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 M)......................................................................................... Oiovelia rivicola Spangler View in CoL (Venezuela and Brazil)

- Forewing with whitish pruinose areas well delimited between cells ( Figs. 4 View FIGURE 4 A, C, G); paramere not distinctly widened at apex ( Figs. 2 View FIGURE 2 H, J, L)...................................................................................... 4

4. Pronotum uniformly colored, varying from orange to reddish brown ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 G); mesocoxae brown to dark brown ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 L); paramere tapering to apex ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 L)................................. Oiovelia pydanieli Rodrigues & Melo (Brazil) View in CoL

- Pronotum varying from orange brown to reddish brown, with anterior lobe dark brown to black ( Figs. 4 View FIGURE 4 A, C); mesocoxae yellow to yellowish brown ( Figs. 4 View FIGURE 4 J–K); if paramere tapering to apex, then proctiger with a slight depression medially on dorsal surface............................................................................................. 5

5. Major part of propleura and all mesopleura dark brown to black ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 J); proctiger of male with a slight depression on dorsal surface of posterior half; paramere slightly tapering to apex ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 H)........ Oiovelia chenae Rodrigues & Melo (Brazil) View in CoL

- Pro- and mesopleura with dorsal half orange brown and ventral half dark brown ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 K); proctiger of male without depression on posterior half; paramere slightly narrowed medially, with apex slightly more expanded ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 J)................................................................................ Oiovelia hamadae Rodrigues & Melo ( Brazil) View in CoL

6. Proctiger of male with a pair (1+1) of small spines medially on dorsal surface (as in fig. 2F)......................... 7

- Proctiger of male without spines on dorsal surface (as in fig. 2D).............................................. 8

7. Pronotum reddish orange; legs yellowish to light brown; pruinosity on forewing not well-defined ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 D); paramere with a slight ventral expansion ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 G)......................... Oiovelia brasiliensis Moreira, Nessimian & Rúdio (Brazil) View in CoL

- Pronotum and legs blackish; pruinosity on forewing well-defined between cells ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 E); paramere not expanded on ventral surface ( Figs. 2 View FIGURE 2 F, K).......................................... Oiovelia machadoi Rodrigues & Moreira (Brazil) View in CoL

8. Pronotum dark brown to black ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 F); paramere with a slight expansion on ventral surface of posterior half ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 N)..................................................................... Oiovelia viannai Rodrigues & Melo ( Brazil) View in CoL

- Pronotum distinctly orange to reddish brown ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 , 4 View FIGURE 4 B); paramere without expansion on ventral surface ( Figs. 2 View FIGURE 2 D, I)... 9

9. Head dark brown to black, with posterior region and inner margin of eyes dark orange; pronotum with lateral borders of posterior lobe darker; forewing with faint pruinosity between cells ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 B)........................................................ Oiovelia cunucunumana Drake & Maldonado-Capriles View in CoL (Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, Paraguay, and Argentina)

- Head and pronotum distinctly orange; forewing with distinct pruinosity between cells ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 A, E)................................................................................ Oiovelia johnpolhemi sp. nov. (Mexico and Belize)
