Diagnosis. Antenna frequently absent, papilliform and minute when present; secondary ciliary organs absent. Four prebranchial segments. Branchiae numbering up to 25 pairs; branchiae ciliated, conical with bluntly rounded tips. Modified notochaetae forked in anterior chaetigers, then acicular and with a subdistal spine.

Distribution. Eastern Atlantic from Celtic Sea ( Hartley 1981) to Portugal ( Gil & Sardà 1999). Arctic, from the Barents Sea to the Chukchi Sea ( Strelzov 1973). Western Atlantic from North Carolina ( Day 1973) to Gulf of Mexico ( Gaston 1984). Mediterranean ( Laubier & Ramos 1974). Pacific: Japan ( Imajima 1973), eastern coast from western Canada ( Blake 1996) to Baja California (de León-González et al. 2006). South Africa ( Day 1967).
