Canthidium (Canthidium) ardens Bates, 1887 View in CoL

Canthidium ardens Bates, 1887: 48 View in CoL [here transferred to the subgenus Canthidium View in CoL ]. Type locality: Nicaragua: Chontales, and Panama: Chiriquí: Bugaba: Volcán (“Nicaragua, Chontales [...]; Panama, Bugaba, Volcan de Chiriqui”). Type material: Unknown number of syntypes of both sexes (BMNH). Distribution: From Mexico to Panama (Kohlmann & Solís 2006a).

Canthidium ardens mutatum Bates, 1887: 48 View in CoL , new synonymy [except for Blackwelder (1944), this name has been overlooked by all authors since its establishment. Nonetheless, it is clearly available as Bates presented a proper description for it (“ Var. C. mutatum View in CoL [under Canthidium ardens View in CoL ]. Saturate viridi-aeneum, splendidum View in CoL ; corpore subtus et pedibus concoloribus”) and treated the taxon as a “local variety” of C. ardens View in CoL differing only by colour. Since Kohlmann & Solís (2004a), in their revision of the Canthidium View in CoL from Costa Rica, considered both green and red specimens as conspecifics, and because the only difference noted by Bates concerns the green colouration of his specimen, I chose to treat C. mutatum View in CoL as a junior synonym of C. ardens View in CoL ]. Type locality: Costa Rica. Type material: Holotype unsexed (MNHN—ex Bates collection).

Canthidium rhodopus Bates, 1887: 48 View in CoL [synonymized by Kohlmann & Solís 2006a: 244]. Type locality: Guatemala: Petén: Zapote Bobal (“ Guatemala, Zapote ”). Type material: Two syntypes ( BMNH) .
