Erwinius prognatus Olmi & Guglielmino, New Genus and New Species

Diagnosis of female. The female of this species has the following diagnostic characters: fore tarsus not chelate (Figs 1, 2); head prognathous ( Fig. 2 ); clypeus about twice as broad as eyes (Fig. 1); face and part of clypeus with a strong median raised carina (Fig. 1).

Description of female. Fully winged; length 3.12–3.43 mm (holotype 3.12 mm). Completely brown. Antennae clavate, without rhinaria; antennal segments in the following proportions: 20:7:22:9:8:6:6:6:6:8. Head prognathous, shiny, smooth, without sculpture, with sparse very long hairs; clypeus very large, about twice as wide as eyes (Fig. 1); frontal line complete, in the anterior third of face and posterior third of clypeus taking the shape of a raised carina; occipital carina incomplete, partly not present on ventral side near genae and mouth; occiput and ventral side very excavated; posterior margin of mouth straight ( Fig. 3 ); POL = 5; OL = 2; OOL = 11; OPL = 5; TL = 14; temples much longer than eyes (14:10); greatest breadth of posterior ocelli shorter than POL (3:5); mandibles very strong, with 3 teeth progressing larger from anterior one to posterior ( Fig. 4 ). Maxillary palpi 4-segmented. Labial palpi 2-segmented. Pronotum much shorter than scutum (6:17), crossed by a transverse furrow; pronotal tubercles reaching tegulae. Scutum, scutellum and metanotum shiny, smooth, finely punctate, without sculpture among punctures, with sparse very long hairs. Notauli incomplete, reaching about 0.4 length of scutum. Propodeum shiny, smooth, very weakly granulated, without transverse or longitudinal keels; posterior surface with central area weakly excavated, strongly punctate. Mesopleura and metapleura shiny, smooth, very weakly granulated. Forewing with a dark transverse band beneath pterostigma; distal part of stigmal vein shorter than proximal part (6:10). Fore legs not chelate, with femur strongly broadened (Figs 1, 2), broader that mid and hind femora. Tibial spurs 1, 1, 2; hind tibia with two spurs, one very long and the other short, hardly visible.

Material examined. Female holotype: Ecuador, Napo Province, Reserva Ethnica Waorani, 1 Km S Onkone Gare Camp, 00°39.10’S 76°26.0’W, 220 m, 6.x.1994, insecticidal fogging of mostly bare green leaves, some with covering of lichenous or bryophytic plants in terre firme forest, at Trans 10, Sta. 9, Project MAXUS, Lot 888, T. L. Erwin et al. coll. ( USNM); 2 female paratypes: same locality label ( CNCI, MOLC).
