Diagnosis. Integument ventrocaudally areolate, dorsally papillate. Dorsum with eight muscle attachment plates, two of which larger and including postocularia, the remaining in size not exceeding glandular diameter ( Fig. 1A View FIGURES 1 ). Cx-I+II medially not fused; Cx-III medially bearing Cxgl-4. Excretory pore smooth. Capitulum ( Figs 2F–G View FIGURE 2 ) with short rostrum; P-4 as long as, or only slightly longer than P-3, P-5 short, with strong distal claws; Leg ambulacrum with claw blade and dorsal and ventral clawlets.

Description

Integument ventrocaudally with fine denticles arranged in a hexagonal pattern; these denticles laterally and caudally inflating to form rounded papillae; these papillae regularly-arranged, nowhere fused to form lines or irregular structures, completely covering the dorsal surface. Dorsum with eight muscle attachment plates, following the terminology of Bader & Spasgozarian (1980) from anterior to posterior: medially, (1) small, round praefrontalia, (2) rather large plates consisting of fused postfrontalia, postocularia and dc-1, (3) very small dc-2 located close to each other, (4) larger and more distanced dc-3, (5) dc-4, smaller, but more distanced from each other than dc-3, and, laterally, (6–8) small, round platelets dl-1-3 located at the levels of interspace dc-1/2, dc-3, and interspace dc-3/4, respectively ( Fig. 1A View FIGURES 1 ). Ventral view ( Figs. 1B View FIGURES 1 , 2A View FIGURE 2 ): Cx-I+II medially close to each other, but not fused. Cx-III with a medial glandular opening (Cxgl-4). Ac-1-2 longish, Ac-3 roundish. An unpaired postgenital sclerite well distanced from genital field; other ventrocaudal sclerites absent, although muscules attached to cuticle on their places distinct. Excretory pore smooth. Capitulum ( Figs. 2F–G View FIGURE 2 ) with short rostrum; palps ( Figs. 1C–D View FIGURES 1 , 2D–E View FIGURE 2 ) normally held in a spread position (with their medial surface widely visible in dorsal view); P-1 without dorsal seta; P-2 with about 15 short and stout setae, all restricted to the dorsal part, distoventrally with a long projection at its tip bearing two fine setae, one long and one short; P-3 with smoothly convex ventral margin, bearing about 10 fine setae and several short hairs, all restricted to the dorsal part; P-4 relatively short, with the two ventral peg setae close to each other, the proximal one on a distinct elevation in the proximal part, the distal one minor and on a less developed thickening located slightly anterior to the centre of the segment; P-5 short, with strong distal claws; Leg segments slender, III-/IV-L with a few short, not plumose dorsal setae; ambulacrum with claw blade slightly protruding, bearing a long dorsal and a short ventral clawlet.

Etymology. Named after the country of the type locality.

Discussion. In the shape of the palp combining a P-2 bearing a finger-like ventrodistal extension and a rather stout P-4 with the ventral peg setae strong, located close to each other on elevations near the segment centre, Sperchon pelopeius sp. nov. differs from all species known in the subgenus except for the rather similar Sperchon afzalipouri Bader & Sepasgozarian, 1980 , described from Iran (Semnan Province, Bader & Sepasgozarian 1980). This species differs in the absence of glandularia on Cx-III; a more elongated, fingershaped distoventral projection of P-2 and a stouter P-4, in both sexes being shorter than P-3.

Habitat: Crenobiont.

Distribution. Only found in rheocrene springs in the N Peloponnese.
