Type Locality: Madagascar, Mouroundava [Morondava].

Vernacular Names: Large-eared Tenrec.

Subspecies: :

Subspecies Geogale aurita subsp. aurita Milne-Edwards and A. Grandidier 1872

Subspecies Geogale aurita subsp. orientalis G. Grandidier and Petit 1930

Distribution: Western deciduous forest and spiny bush of S and W Madagascar and Fénérive, NE Madagascar.

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: The subspecific status of G. a. orientalis is uncertain. This species was not found during a recent survey of the environs of Fénérive ( Rakotondravony et al., 1998). The easternmost occurrence of this species was recorded recently in SE Madagascar ( Goodman et al., 1999 a).
