Sypilus venturae Dohrn, 1882 View in CoL (= Sypilus orbignyi Guérin-Méneville, 1840 )

( Figures 1–4 View FIGURES 1–8 )

Sypilus venturae Dohrn, 1882: 465 View in CoL ; Monné, 2018c: 189 (cat.; in syn.).

Described based on a single specimen from Argentina (Mendoza). Berg (1883) synonymized S. venturae View in CoL with S. orbignyi View in CoL (translated): “I especially mention these wide distributional districts, because often one and the same species, or varieties of a species, which originated from Mendoza and Patagonia, are set up as new species because of the widely scattered localities. Even the species of our revered President, Sypilus Venturae, I View in CoL suspect is only a variety of S. Orbignyi View in CoL Guér.” Thus, Berg (1883) did not formalize the synonymy, as usually has been recorded. Furthermore, Dohrn (1883) not only keep the species as valid, but also corrected the type locality (translated): “It has already been designated by Professor Berg, p. 392, as a candidate for death, so that I can bury him without conscience in the ocean of synonymy. But I have received a second specimen from the same source, from the Argentine Mendoza, and it is precisely this second specimen that brings the former to its specific value. For, first, it is smaller and slimmer than the latter, so it refutes the reasons that arise from the stature, but second, the sender now gives me a correction of the locality. Not both from Mendoza but from Chacabuco in the province of Buenos Aires, both specimens were found. The antennae and legs of the second smaller specimen are not so blackish brown, but brighter than those of the one sent earlier, but they do not show the yellowish-green color of these parts of the body remotely, as they do on the plate in Plate 20, fig. 1 in Voyage de d’Orbigny.” Dias (1986) pointed out the correction of the type locality from Dohrn (1883). It was Lameere (1902b) who formalized the synonymy between S. venturae View in CoL and S. orbignyi View in CoL .

Monné (2018c) and Tavakilian & Chevillotte (2018) reported the holotype being deposited in the CMSP collection. However, the specimen currently is in ZMPA collection.
