Callichroma (Callichroma) auricomum rubescens Schmidt, 1924 View in CoL (= Callichroma auricomum ( Linnaeus, 1767))

( Figures 38–41 View FIGURES 34–41 )

Callichroma (Callichroma) auricomum rubescens Schmidt, 1924: 320 View in CoL ; Monné, 2018a: 39 (cat.; in syn.).

This subspecies was described based on two syntypes ( Ecuador, Gualaquiza; Colombia, Cauca). Monné (2018a), and Napp & Martins (2009) reported the syntypes being deposited in ZMHB collection. Tavakilian & Chevillotte (2018) listed the syntypes being deposited in the MNLI collection. According to Horn & Kahle (1936): “Schwar- zer, Bernhard (1868–1931), Coleopt. der Welt (spec. Cerambycid.) 1929/31 an Senckenberg. Mus., Frankfurt a. M. [SMFD].” The SMFD website (2019) corroborates the information by Horn & Kahle (1936).

According to Schmidt (1924) (translated): “In addition, Mr. Schwarzer (Aschaffenburg) made available to me his valuable private collection (coll. Schw.), for which I likewise express my thanks;” and, about the types of Callichroma (Callichroma) auricomum rubescens , “ Ecuador: Gualaquiza (coll. Schw.).—Columbien: Cauca (coll. Schw.).” As the syntype from Colombia is deposited in the DEIC collection, the syntype from Ecuador would be there too. However, Gaedike & Behne (2013: 172) listed only the syntype from Colombia. Thus, it is probable that Schmidt retained the specimen from Colombia, which is currently in the DEIC collection.

Monné (1993) included Callichroma (Callichroma) auricomum rubescens under synonymy of Callichroma auricomum . Napp & Martins (2009) only listed the synonymy, but did not provide an explanation. As there is no explanation about the reasons for the synonymy, and it was not indicated as “new synonymy” in Monné (1993), we believe that the synonymy was never formally established. It would be necessary to examine the type(s) of Cerambyx auricomus Linnaeus, 1767 (depository institution unknown) to confirm the synonymy. Apparently, the holotype of Cerambyx auricomus is the specimen used by Gronovius (1764) to describe his species “534”, and illustrated by Gronovius (1781). As the figure by Gronovius (1781) agrees well with what currently is known as Callichroma auricomum , we accept the indication by Monné (1993) as a formal synonymy. According to Santos-Silva et al. (2016): “We do not know where the specimens recorded by Rösel and Gronovius are deposited, or if they survived.” Curiously, what no one commented on is that the Cerambyx auricomus was originally spelled as “auricomns”, and not “auricomus.” Evidently it was a lapsus calami or a printer’s error. Linnaeus (1767) used an asterisk after the citation of Gronovius (1764) work. It is not clear to us what the asterisk means, but, according to Blunt (2001), “… the asterisk indicates, a more detailed account will be found.” This appears to be controversial, and does not explain whether Linnaeus examined any specimens, or whether the species was described based only on the description and illustration of Gronovius (1764).
