scientific name

Coenobita clypeatus
status

Coenobita clypeatus (F., 1787)

Although not an aquatic species, we include it here because it was present in large numbers along most ghuts (see also Platenberg 2006). This iconic land hermit crab found throughout the Caribbean was found across most of our collecting sites on St. Thomas. We also found it on Saba Island in small numbers and observed specimens along a drainage at Cruz Bay, St. John. Chase and Hobbs (1969) and Platenberg (2006) provide records from St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix.
