Xorides tarsalis (Szépligeti, 1914) View in CoL
( Fig. 12 View FIGURE 12 )
Material examined. Holotype. DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO: female, Kuilu , without date (deposited in: HNHM).
Diagnosis. Xorides tarsalis is characterized by the combination of the following characters: body generally orange-black; vertex smooth, minutely punctate near ocelli and wrinkled near occipital carina; antenna subapically sharply angled at a single joint; face reticulate rugose; pronotum densely punctate, smooth ventrally; epomia absent; epicnemial carina absent; propodeum with apical transverse carina interrupted centrally, tooth-like projections almost indistinct; fore and middle trochantelli without apical tooth; fore wing with vein cu-a basad of Rs&M by about 0.3 of its length; first metasomal tergite 1.6× as long as apical width, densely punctate, with weak transverse grooves, carinae absent; ovipositor about 3.5× length of hind tibia.
Re-description. Female. Holotype ( Fig. 12 View FIGURE 12 ). Body length approximately 21.0 mm. Fore wing 14.0 mm.
Head ( Figs 12A, 12B, 12C, 12F View FIGURE 12 ) depressed, temples short and parallel behind eyes, covered with white setae; frons transversely wrinkled, with short carina-like projection between antennal sockets (apically widened); length of the ocellar-ocular distance as long as maximum diameter of lateral ocellus; ocelli small, hind ocellus not extended behind eye; temples transversely wrinkled; vertex smooth, minutely punctate near ocelli and wrinkled near occipital carina; occipital carina complete; antenna subapically sharply angled at a single joint, with 22 flagellomeres, 16 th flagellomere with three long sensillae; face about 0.7× as long as wide, reticulate rugose, tentorial pits deep; malar space 0.7× basal width of mandible, with strongly depressed subocular groove; clypeus 0.6× as long as wide, transversely wrinkled proximally, rugulose distally, rounded apically.
Mesosoma ( Figs 12B, 12C, 12D, 12E, 12I View FIGURE 12 ) with dense white setae; propleuron rugulose dorsally, indistinctly sculptured ventrally; pronotum swollen apically, densely punctate except ventral part, epomia absent; mesoscutum elongate, densely rugulo-punctate, with weak notauli; scutellum and postscutellum more sparsely punctate than mesoscutum; mesopleuron densely punctate except ventral part and speculum; epicnemial carina absent; sternaulus indistinct; metapleuron densely punctate; propodeum densely punctate, with apical transverse carina interrupted centrally, tooth-like projections almost indistinct; pleural and submetapleural carinae present; spiracles elongate.
Legs slender, hind femur 3.8× as long as wide; hind coxa densely punctate, fore and middle tibiae not swollen, narrower than femora; with V-shaped median ventral groove and subapical emargination; fore and middle trochantelli without apical tooth; tarsal claws simple.
Wings. Fore wing with vein 2 rs-m about as long as the distance between 2 rs-m and 2 m-cu; vein cu-a basad of Rs&M by about 0.3 of its length; hind wing with distance between distal abscissa of Cu 1 and M about as long as vein cu-a.
Metasoma ( Figs 12E, 12H View FIGURE 12 ) densely punctate; first tergite 1.6× as long as apical width, densely punctate, with weak transverse grooves, carinae absent; second tergite 1.6× as long as apical width, looks like densely punctate (not distinctly visible), with two basolateral swellings delimited by grooves; third tergite 0.8× as long as apical width, the same sculpture and structure as previous tergite, notched apically; fourth tergite apically notched; the remaining tergites indistinctly punctate; ovipositor about 3.5× length of hind tibia, with the apical teeth; ovipositor sheaths densely pubescent.
Colour. Head black except two frontal marks and clypeus proximally yellow; antenna brownish except flagellomeres 9–16 whitish; mesosoma orange except propleuron brown, pronotum and mesoscutum black and propodeum with brownish marks; metasoma brownish-black except apical marks on tergites 5–6 yellow; coxae orange, brownish apically and the rest of legs uniformly red-brownish (fore and middle) to brownish (hind); hind tarsus yellow; pterostigma brown; ovipositor sheaths brown, yellowish centrally.
Male. Unknown.
Distribution. Democtratic Republic of Congo.
