Material examined

Austria, Tyrol: numerous „„ and ǫǫ ( ZMUH), Obergurgl [Dorfumgebung (5around village), Rotmoostal, Schönwaisalm-Gurgler Alm], c. 46 ° 529 N, 11 ° 019 E, 1960–1964 (coll. P. Palmgren) .

Description

Tongiorgi (1966a) provides a detailed redescription of this species. Here, we only list and illustrate the main diagnostic features to distinguish this species from P. pseudomixta sp. nov.

Male. Carapace with narrow yellow median band and similarly coloured lateral bands ( Figure 1D View Figure 1 ). Metatarsi and tarsi I swollen and covered with dense and long setae ( Figures 1G,H View Figure 1 ; 2C,D View Figure 2 ). Tarsi I uniformly yellow ( Figure 1G,H View Figure 1 ). Palea with steeply rounded ridge ( Figures 3A,E View Figure 3 ; 4C View Figure 4 ); terminal apophysis not rounded ( Figure 3E,F View Figure 3 ).

Female. Epigyne variable in shape ( Figures 3H,I View Figure 3 ; 4A,D,H,I View Figure 4 ), apical pockets fused; however, fusion is clearly visible only in scanning electron micrographs ( Figure 3H,I View Figure 3 ); median septum with longitudinal groove ( Figure 3H,I View Figure 3 ).

Measurements

Males/females. Carapace length 2.98–3.18/2.93–3.35.

Length ratios. Tibia/metatarsus I 1.03–1.05/0.98; carapace/metatarsus I 1.61–1.65/ 1.74; carapace/tarsus IV (females only) 1.92–2.02; carapace/metatarsus IV (females only) 0.89–0.92.

Distribution

Central Alps ( France, Italy, Switzerland, former Yugoslavia, Austria and Germany) ( Tongiorgi 1966a,b; Heimer and Nentwig 1991; Pirchegger and Thaler 1999) ( Figure 5 View Figure 5 ).

Remarks

The extensive pubescence on leg I of P. mixta males led us to expect that this species might have numerous pores associated with these dense setae similar to the condition in certain other lycosid species ( Kronestedt and Marusik 2002). However, our scanning electron microscopy studies revealed no distinct pores in P. mixta , although scattered pores were found in P. pseudomixta sp. nov. ( Figure 2J View Figure 2 ).
