Coeliccia pyriformis View in CoL was original described from northern Vietnam based on a single male ( Laidlaw 1932). Later Asahina (1997) and Steinhoff & Do (2013) described and recorded C. acco View in CoL (= C. pyriformis View in CoL ) from several locations in northern Vietnam but did not provide a description of its female. Although Steinhoff & Uhl (2015) provided a photo of the female of C. pyriformis View in CoL from Tam Dao ( Steinhoff & Uhl 2015: 270, Fig. 11B), they did not provide a formal description either. Therefore we here describe the female of C. pyriformis View in CoL .

Furthermore, Asahina (1997) only provided a rough sketch of the genital ligula of C. acco View in CoL (= C. pyriformis View in CoL ). Steinhoff & Do (2013) provided figures of the genital ligula, but these figures do not properly illustrate the terminal fold. Therefore we provide new figures of the genital ligula of C. pyriformis View in CoL for better comparison with C. mientrung View in CoL . ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 A–B).

Description of female. Head ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 A–B). Labrum and postclypeus shiny black. Anteclypeus and mandibles yellow, anteclypeus with a darker area on both sides. Genae yellow. Remainder of dorsum of head matte black, apart from yellow bands running from edge of eyes to lateral ocelli and on to frontal ocellus, not quite meeting in middle, and two small oblong postocular spots. Antennae blackish, but top of first and bottom of second segment white. Eyes three–colored, black dorsally, green in front, shading to blue in back.

Prothorax ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 A, D). Anterior and posterior pronotal lobes black, middle lobe yellow apart from black stripe connecting anterior and posterior lobes. Propleuron yellow. Posterior lobe with a distinct, almost square, protrusion directed posteriorly on its posterior margin, with on either side a smaller somewhat curved earlike lobe ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 D).

Synthorax ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 A). Mesepisternum black, with almost full length greenish-blue antehumeral stripe ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 A). Mesepimeron largely black, but yellow of metepisternum extending onto ventral third. Mesinfraepisternum almost completely black. Metepisternum yellow, with a black line over metapleural suture, dorsally connected to black of mesepimeron ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 A). Metepimeron and metinfraepisternum yellow. Legs. Pale yellow with black stripe over extensor surface of tibia and also flexor surface of first pair of legs, and over flexor surface of femora; spines and claws dark. Coxae and trochanters pale yellow. Wings. Hyaline, 18 postnodal crossveins in forewing, 17 in hindwing. Pterostigma brown, covering 1.4 cells.

Abdomen. S1 almost completely yellow, with black dorsum. S2–7 black dorsally and yellow ventrally, some with hint of subapical ventral half-ring. Slightly more than proximal half of S8 black, ventral sclerite and distal half yellow, apart from posterior edge, which is thinly black. S9 black with large yellow spot dorsally. S10 black and cerci yellow. Ovipositor black with yellow mark dorso-apically (for S8–10 see Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 C).

Measurements (mm). Hindwing 28; abdomen including appendages 42.

Variation in other examined females. One female from Cuc Phuong with black cerci, 17 postnodal crossveins in forewing, 16 in hindwing, pterostigma of forewing covering one cell and of hindwing covering 2 cells. Second female from Cuc Phuong with 19 postnodal crossveins in forewing. Female from Yen Bai with yellow from genae extending laterally onto the antefrons above the postclypeus, yellow antehumeral stripe, central square protrusion of posterior lobe of pronotum not as distinctly protruding in lateral view, 16 postnodal crossveins in hindwing, cerci black.

Description of genital ligula of male. The terminal segment of genital ligula of C. pyriformis ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 A–B) with two apical flagella, extending perpendicular from its distal corners and ending in a hammerhead shape. Terminal segment also has apical fold that covers about distal third of segment and somewhat constricts before expanding to its maximum width, creating impression of two lateral rounded points just before distal margin.

Measurements (mm). Females. Hindwing 23–29; abdomen including appendages 35–42.
