Elodes Rousselii Solier, 1849: 460 View in CoL (locus typicus: Calbuco)
Helodes Rousseli Solier : Gemminger & von Harold 1869: 1619
Elodes rousseli: Pic 1914: 26 (checklist; Chile); Blackwelder 1944: 266 (checklist; Chile); Moroni 1985: 173 ( Chile, prov. Llanquihue, Calbuco)
Type material. \ Calbuco. Mauldler” [handwritten with brown ink, probably by Solier]; “9 \ 45” [handwrit- ten on a green, round label]. The specimen is missing head and pronotum, and lateral portion of its right elytron is damaged.
Description. EL = 9.7 mm. Elytra with subparallel lateral sides, with 3 longitudinal carinae (costulae of Libonatti & Ruta 2003), covered with relatively long yellow setae that form peculiar patchy pattern. Penis (L 1.54 mm, W 0.57 mm) with oblong oval pala, parameroids with subparallel sides, outer margins of apical portions subtly serrate, trigonium divided into two long and thin rod-like processes, ca. 0.7 × as long as parameroids; tegmen (L 1.75 mm, W 0.94 mm) massive, parameres wide at bases, gradually narrowing toward apices, outer margins subtly serrate, inner margins of apical portions with minute setae, apices pointed; tergite VIII (L 1.44 mm, W 1.12 mm) with subrectangular apical plate, covered with setae, apical margin with short setae, apodemes shorter than apical plate; tergite IX (L 1.15 mm, W 0.87 mm) membranous, without setation, apodemes short, distinctly shorter than apical plate; sternite VIII (L 0.75 mm, W 0.78 mm) u-shaped, with sparse and short setae on apical margin; sternite IX (L 0.80 mm, W 0.92 mm) consisting of two subtriangular hemisternites, covered with distinct setae on apical portion.
Remarks. The original description includes no information on the number of specimens examined by Solier. A lectotype is designated in order to preserve the stability of nomenclature by selecting one specimen as the sole, name-bearing type of the taxon. The species belongs to an undescribed genus (Ruta in litt.). The additional label gives information on behavior of the species (“on the shrub, on the trees, it imitates very well the death by applying the head and the legs alongside the abdomen”), which was included in the note supplementing the original descrip- tion ( Solier 1849).
