Type Locality: "from Sierra Madre, near Guadalupe y Calvo, Chihuahua, Mexico (7,000 feet [2134 m] altitude)." .
Vernacular Names: Sierra Madre Ground Squirrel.
Distribution: SW Chihuahua ( Mexico).
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (nt).
Discussion: Subgenus Callospermophilus ( Hall, 1981:410) . Gromov et al. (1965:150) considered Callospermophilus a subgenus of the genus Otospermophilus . S. madrensis and S. lateralis are sister species ( Harrison et al., 2003). Reviewed by Best and Thomas (1991 b, Mammalian Species No. 378).
