C o m m e n t: Paederus verbasci SCHRANK View in CoL , too, is listed as a nomen dubium in the genus Paederus View in CoL by SMETANA (2004). The original description is contained in a work on Bavarian animals and based on an unspecified number of syntypes. The details indicated in this description ("sattschwarz; der Rückenschild halbkugelförmig; das lezte Glied der vordern Fressspizen fadenförmig, das vorlezte keulenförmig.... unter den Blättern des Wollkrautes.... Lang 1 1/4. Die Flügeldecken gerundet, wie bey den Oelkäfern, vielleicht flügellos.... am lezten Ringe des Hinterleibes... einen Haarbüschel beiderseits") ( SCHRANK 1798), are not easily interpreted. The name clearly does not refer to a species of Paederus View in CoL , but possibly one of Omaliinae View in CoL , Oxytelinae , Steninae View in CoL , Tachyporinae View in CoL , or Aleocharinae (Aleochara, Autalia) View in CoL , if it refers to a species of Staphylinidae View in CoL at all. The only older name fairly in agreement with the description is that of Platystethus arenarius View in CoL , with which P. verbasci View in CoL is formally synonymised.
