Cheumatopsyche fahara Oláh & Johanson , new species

Fig. 231–235

This species is similar to C. maculata Mosely from South Africa, and C. copiosa Kimmins from Central Africa, from which it is distinguished by its longer, fused ventrocaudal setose lobes that are oriented obliquely posterodorsad and are apically rounded. In addition, the harpagones are not tapering, but parallel-sided, with mesally elongating cavity forming spoon-like processes.

Male. Wing membrane unicolorous pale grey without spots or pattern. Maxillary palp segment I shortest, segment II longer, segments III and IV equally long, segment V as long as sum of segments I–IV. Head dorsum pale brown with 7 similarly coloured warts. Swollen setal warts absent from proepisternum. Each protibiea with 2 spurs. Protarsal claws asymmetrical, laterally flanked by setal bundle. Forewing length 4.9 mm, hind wing length 3.8 mm. Forewing crossvein m-cu and cu forming continuous line. Hind wing fork I absent.

Male genitalia. Segment IX fused annularly; tergum short, sternum about 3x longer than tergum ( Fig. 231); anterior margins of segment IX nearly straight, vertical; dorsally narrowing ( Fig. 231); apical lobe on posterolateral margins weakly developed into blunt, short lobe above base of coxopodites; spine row along posterior margins of segment IX complete. Intersegmental area between segment IX and segment X sloping. Segment X long, ventral margin curving dorsad ( Fig. 231), with fused, poorly delineated, dorsad apicoventral setal lobes ( Fig. 231). Apicoventral setal lobes broad, apically rounded, surrounding narrow dorsal interlobular gap ( Fig. 232). Lateral interlobular gap absent. Setaless mesocaudal lobe reduced; apical margin concave, forming base of dorsal interlobular gap. Pair of lateral setose areas forming elongately produced warts located at mid-length of segment X, distad of transverse sutures. Transverse sutures weak, running obliquely in lateral view ( Fig. 231). Longitudinal sutures more clearly visible. Coxopodites slender, distal half slightly wider in lateral view ( Fig. 231); straight, not exceeding apex of segment X; gently curving mesad in ventral view ( Fig. 233). Harpagones almost as wide as coxopodites; parallel-sided in lateral view ( Fig. 231), with mesal concavity ( Fig. 234). Phallotheca ( Fig. 235) slender, narrowest immediately after mid-length, broadening from distal one-quarter, with ventral keel; sclerotised endothecal process almost circular, somewhat shallower than apex of phallotheca, phallotremal sclerites small circular; vestigial ventral endothecal membranous lobe not visible.

Holotype male: MADAGASCAR: Mahitsy , Chutes de Faharantsana, ix.1954 [R. Paulian] ( MNHN, in alcohol).

Distribution: Madagascar.

Etymology: from the type locality.
