Genus Petersenaspis Sendall & Salazar-Vallejo, 2013 View in CoL

Type species. Petersenaspis capillata (Nonato, 1966) .

Diagnosis (modified after Sendall & Salazar-Vallejo 2013). Sternaspids with introvert hooks sub-distally expanded. Pre-shield region with 8 segments. Ventro-caudal shield stiff with faintly developed ribs, and no concentric lines. Shield marginal chaetae distinctly long, with posterior fascicles almost as long as shield length.

Remarks. Sendall & Salazar-Vallejo (2013) did not include the relative length of shield marginal chaetae in the generic diagnosis of Petersenaspis , probably because the chaetae are brittle and usually broken. In the two known species of Petersenaspis as well as in P. salazari sp. nov. described below, the shield marginal chaetae are rather long and those from the posterior fascicles are almost as long as shield length. This is a contrasting feature compared to that of the similar genus Sternapsis , where the posterior fascicles are much shorter than shield length. Thus, we add this feature to the generic diagnosis of Petersenaspis .
