Cleome gynandra Linnaeus , Species Plantarum 2: 671. 1753.
"Habitat in Asiae, Africae, Americae calidissimis." RCN: 4894.
Lectotype (Al-Shehbaz in Howard, Fl. Lesser Antilles 4: 302. 1988): [icon] " Cara-veela " in Rheede, Hort. Malab. 9: 43, t. 24. 1689.
Current name: Cleome gynandra L. ( Capparaceae ).
Note: In the absence of material in LINN, Iltis (in Brittonia 12: 284. 1960) interpreted the name via the cited Rheede plate ("in lieu of the type"). Elffers & al. (in Hubbard & Milne-Redhead, Fl. Trop. E. Africa, Capparidaceae : 18. 1964) indicated material in Herb. Clifford as the holotype but did not distinguish between two sheets associated with this name. As they are evidently not part of a single gathering, Art. 9.15 does not apply. Codd & Kers (in Codd & al., Fl. Southern Africa 13: 138. 1970) indicated 850.4 (LINN), a collection annotated by Linnaeus with the later epithet “pentaphylla” and crucially lacking the relevant Species Plantarum number (i.e. “2”). It was evidently a post-1753 addition to the herbarium, and is not original material for the name. Al-Shehbaz, however, clearly indicated the Rheede plate as the type.
