( Figs 8–10 View FIGURES 8 – 10 )
Type material. Holotype, male, CHINA: Fukien Province, Shaowu City, 25– 30.iv. 1943, T. Maa leg., in BPBM. Paratypes: 2 3, Shaowu, Taohulan, 1000 m, 6–10.v.1943; 1 3, Fukien Province, Chungan, Tsilichiao, 1000 m, 27.iv.1942; 1 Ƥ, same data as holotype but date 30.iv-1942; all T. Maa, all in BPBM.
Etymology. This new species is named after the province in China where the type series was collected.
Diagnosis. A species from the australis group with a black frons, an ochre yellow thorax, a hyaline postcubital vein (CuP) and a transversely striped abdomen. Male terminalia species-specific.
Description. Male. Head semiglobular, deeply concave posteriorly. Eyes bare, upper frons black, narrowed towards frontal callus, about as broad as anterior ocellus at the narrowest point. Vertex and complete occiput black. Frontal callus prominent in lateral view, rounded, about as high as scape is long, yellow but diffuse brownish in lower half Antenna ochre yellow, arista brown, pedicel triangularly prominent on inner side, flagellum transverse cut distally, with distinct upper distal corner. Face, proboscis and palpus ochre yellow. Hairs on head completely yellowish, barely longer than scape, mainly erect on frons, face and vertex.
Thorax yellow, more pale brown on scutum, scutellum and mediotergite. Yellow thoracic pile shorter than frontal hairs, dense on scutum and sparse on pleura, especially large part of anepisternum bare and shining. Hairs more brown and erect on dorsum, partly appressed, shorter and pale yellow on pleura.
Wing with a slight brownish tinge particularly in distal third, stigma yellowish. Vein R2+3 arising at crossvein R-M and running parallel to R3. Rs slightly longer than crossvein R-M, upper proximal margin of discal cell somewaht arched. M3 straight, parallel to M2, its apical 1/6 missing. Crossvein M-Cu short but distinct. Knob of halteres greyish brown, stem yellow. Hairs on posttegula blackish.
Legs ochre yellow, femora with a pale brownish colour. Leg pile yellow, inconspicuous, only on dorsal surface of fore and mid tarsi brown. Hind tibia and basal half of hind basitarsus dark brown to black, rest of hind tarsus pale yellow and yellowish haired.
Abdomen cylindrical, somewhat clavate, black transverse bands on tergites not reaching lateral margin, slightly constricted in middle, developed on abdominal tergites 1–5. Band on tergite 5 broad but leaving fairly wide anterior and posterior margin yellow. Tergite 6 yellow with central black spot. Venter uniformly ochre yellow. Abdominal pile mostly semi-erect, mainly yellowish but very short and black on dark pattern. Longer pale hairs visible in anterolateral corners and along lateral margin only dorsally. Epandrium conspicuously convex, surstylus well developed. Bifurcate medial process of genital capsule with two symmetrical, slender and somewhat characteristic convergent projections. Each gonocoxite with a flat inner distal process reaching the length of medial projections. Gonostylus simple, rather short, tapering in distal half and pointed apically. Aedeagal complex only little sclerotized, flat, short and bipartite apically.
Length of holotype: body 15.5 mm, wing 15.4 mm.
Length of male paratypes: body 14.1–15.4 mm, wing 13.4–14.0 mm.
Female. Frons broader than in male, black, somewhat tapered towards frontal callus, wider than ocellar triangle at lower margin. Frontal index about 2.6. Frontal callus separated from frons by a transverse line, whitish but yellowish brown on lower surface. Face and proboscis ochre yellow. Antenna yellow, flagellar complex brownish, arista brown. Crossvein M-Cu virtually absent. Other parts as in male including leg colour. Black abdominal spots on tergites 6 and 7 more extensive. Cerci relatively short, apical segment of cerci oval, barely 2.5 times as long as broad, much shorter than basal segment.
Length of female paratype: body 14.0 mm, wing 12.5 mm
Remarks. Resembling P. vulpianus by its size and colour but the lower surface of the frontal callus only diffuse brownish, not black with a pale midline. The frons above the frontal callus distinctly broader, not lineshaped. Abdominal tergite 5 with relatively broad anterior and posterior yellow margins whereas conspicuously black and narrowly yellow only along the anterior margin in P. vulpianus . The male genitalia globose and more prominent than in the latter species, markedly different. From the other species of the australis group possessing the surstyli P. fukienensis sp. nov. differs mainly by a pair of slightly convergent slender processes at the middle of the posterior margin of the genital capsule ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 8 – 10 ).
Ptecticus indicus sp. nov. ( Figs 11–14 View FIGURES 11 – 14 )
Type material. Holotype, male, INDIA: Cinchona, Anamalai Hills, 3500 ft, Mai 1956, P.S. Nathan, in CNC.
Etymology. The species is named after the country where the holotype was collected.
Diagnosis. The frons, vertex and entire occiput are black and black haired. The thorax is yellow and the wing venation of the plesiomorphic type (with sinuate M3 and a well pigmented postcubitus), the legs are yellow, only the tarsi partly darkened and the hind tibiae black. The hind tibia is flattened and somewhat curved in the middle. The abdominal pattern is considerably reduced. The male terminalia are speciesspecific.
Description. Male. Head semiglobular, deeply concave posteriorly. Frons, ocellar tubercle, vertex and occiput black. Frons tapered toward frontal callus, barely broader than anterior ocellus at narrowest point. Frontal callus rounded, in profile about as high as scape is long, pale yellow. Antenna yellow, arista brown, scape slightly longer than broad at distal margin, pedicel with usual subtriangular projection on inner side, flagellar complex almost round, with indistinct incision at base of arista. Face, proboscis and small palpus yellow. Head pile black, erect, on vertex barely as long as scape. Hairs on basal antennal segments black, whereas pile on lower half of frontal callus, face and lower third of postocular area predominantly yellow.
Thorax completely yellow, dull scutum and scutellum ochre yellow, predominantly shining pleura bright yellow. Thoracic pile very short, dense, dark brown to black, semi-erect on scutum, scutellum and mediotergite but paler, yellowish brown along notopleuron. Hairs on pleura mostly yellow and appressed, only on propleuron and katatergite long and erect.
Wing slightly and uniformly tinged with yellowish brown, radial triangle (r2+3) fairly low, vein R2+3 starting slightly before anterior crossvein, somewhat longer than Rs, touching R 1 in distal half. Crossvein R-M long, crossvein M-Cu virtually missing, upper posterior margin of discal cell strongly arched. M3 sinuate, ending before wing margin but its missing distal part much shorter than anterior crossvein. Postcubitus (CuP) well developed, pigmented. Halter brownish, only its stem predominatly yellow, posttegula with a bunch of black hairs.
Legs predominantly yellow including all coxae, with black pattern. Fore and mid legs yellow but last 4 tarsomeres of fore leg darkened. Hind leg yellow including hind tibia (tarsi on both hind legs broken) .. Hind tibia laterally depressed and slightly curved in middle. Pile on leg short, pale and mainly inconspicuous, but dense and black on last fore tarsomere and hind tibia. Scattered black hairs visible also on all parts of mid leg and hind femur.
Abdomen ochre yellow, with black apex beginning from segment 5. Dark pattern on yellow part is limited to basal half of tergite 1, with small and diffuse medial spot and a narrow, nearly semicircular marking at posterior margin of tergite 2. Tergite 4 with a transverse diffuse medial spot in anterior third and partly darkened posterior margin. Sternites 1–3 yellow, only sternite 1 black basally and sternite 4 with a large angulate marking leaving only broader anterior and narrower posterior margin yellow.
Male terminalia ( Figs 11–14 View FIGURES 11 – 14 ). Epandrium much longer than broad, sligthly emarginate proximally, proctiger and cerci of the basal type ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 11 – 14 ). Genital capsule with rounded posterior gonocoxal corners and subquadrate medial process at posterior margin ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 11 – 14 ). Gonostylus elongate, with a subtriangular lobe at inner lower half. Gonocoxal apodeme extanding somewhat proximal of margin of genital capsule. Aedeagal complex almost tube-like, with well pigmented, slightly curved and pointed apical part.
Length: body 14.0 mm, wing 12.7 mm.
Female. Unknown.
Remarks. Very probably a member of the cingulatus group, with the same wing venation (including the type of radial triangle) and probably the same leg colouring. Also the shape of the male terminalia (especially the essentially tube-like aedeagal complex) indicates a distinct relationship. The depression in the middle of hind tibia may represent only an individual variation and not a species-specific character.
