Homoneura (Homoneura) stackelbergi Czerny

Homoneura stackelbergi Czerny, 1932: 19 . Type locality: Jakovlevka, Tigrovaja, Maiche bei Skotovo ( Russia: Ussuri). Shatalkin, 1995: 56; Shatalkin, 2000: 26.

Diagnosis. Frons with a pair of short reddish brown stripes. Face with a pair of round blackish brown spots on upper 1/2, parafacial with black inner margin and a row of short setulae on ventral 1/2. Antennal 1st flagellomere slightly brown on apical 1/2. Palpus yellow. Mesonotum with whitish gray pruinosity between dc rows and brown outside dc rows, anteriormost dc at transverse suture, acr in 6 rows, with two pairs longer. Anepisternum and katepisternum grayish black. Wing with three small brown round preapical spots on R2+3, R4+5 and M1, brown spot weak on M1; brown stripe on r-m and dm-cu. Abdomen with tergites 2–5 each with a wide brown posterior marginal transverse band and a row of strong marginal setae, slightly erect.

Redescription. FEMALE. Body length 3.9 mm, wing length 4.0 mm.

Head ( Figs. 50, 51 ) yellow. Frons slightly wider than long and parallel-sided, with a pair of short reddish brown stripes extending to ocellar triangle; ocellar triangle grayish black; oc developed, as long as anterior or; anterior or shorter than posterior or. Face with a pair of round blackish brown spots, confluent medially, on upper 1/2; parafacial with black inner margin and a row of short setulae on ventral 1/2. Gena about 1/4 height of eye. Antenna yellow; 1st flagellomere slightly brown on apical 1/2, 1.5 times longer than high; arista dark except basally brownish, short plumose, with longest setula as long as 1/2 height of 1st flagellomere. Proboscis yellow, with yellowish and blackish setulae; palpus yellow with blackish setulae.

Thorax ( Fig. 53 ) yellow. Mesonotum with whitish gray pruinosity between dc rows and brown outside dc rows, 3 dc (anteriormost dc at transverse suture), acr in 6 rows, uniformly short hair–like except for two pairs longer; prsc shorter than anteriormost dc. Anepisternum and katepisternum grayish black, 1 anepst, 2 kepst. Scutellum yellow. Legs yellow. Fore femur with 4 strong pv, 6 pd, and ctenidium with 10–11 short bristles; fore tibia with 1 long preapical ad and 1 short apv. Mid femur with 5–6 a and 1 app; mid tibia with 1 strong preapical ad and 2 strong apv. Hind femur with 1 preapical ad; hind tibia with 1 preapical ad and 1 short apv. Wing ( Fig. 52 ) hyaline, with an isolated small brown round preapical spot on R2+3, R4+5 and M1, weak on M1; a brown stripe on r-m and on dm-cu; subcostal cell hyaline; costa with 2nd (between R1 and R2+3), 3rd (between R2+3 and R4+5) and 4th (between R4+5 and M1) sections in proportion of 1.9 mm: 0.8 mm: 0.4 mm (2.4: 1: 0.5); r-m slightly beyond middle of discal cell; ultimate and penultimate sections of M 1 in proportion of 1.2: 1.0; ultimate section of CuA1 about 1/9 of penultimate. Halter yellow.

Abdomen ( Figs. 54, 55 ) yellow; tergites 2–5 each with wide brown posterior marginal transverse band and a row of strong marginal setae, slightly erect.

Material examined. 1 Ƥ ( NHMW), RUSSIA, Ussuri area, 4. VI. 1927, Stackelbergi (Identified by Czerny) [46°55ʹ58.78ʺN 134°05ʹ37.30ʺE] [body covered with white fungi].

Type specimens were deposited in Zoological Museum of Leningrad. 2 3, Maiché bei Skotovo, 4. VI.?; 1 3, von Jakovlevka, Kr. Spassk, 1. VI.?; 1 Ƥ, von Tigrovaja, Kr. Sutschan, 8. VI.?, all specimens in Ussuri area [46°55ʹ59ʺN 134°05ʹ37ʺE] (leg. Stackelberg).

Distribution. Russia (Ussuri). Possibly Japan, but see remarks of Shatalkin (1995, 2000) and herein.

Remarks. Sasakawa & Ikeuchi (1982) illustrated the wing and male genitalia of what they thought was Homoneura stackelbergi according to several specimens from Japan (Honshu). However, Shatalkin (1995, 2000) proposed that the specimens from Japan did not belong to the species Homoneura stackelbergi , instead belonging to a new species. According to the descriptive text and the wing picture by Sasakawa & Ikeuchi (1982), the specimens from Japan have the following diagnostic characters: the wing has a distinct brown round spot in the subcostal cell, and the preapical spot on R4+5 extends upward to the costal margin and forms a narrow stripe along the costal margin between the tips of R2+3 and R4+5; the mesonotum has 5–6 pairs of long acr; the leg is more or less brownish except for all knees yellow; the brown stripes on the mesonotum and abdomen are usually opaque. None of these characters match with those of the female specimen (NHMW) identified by Czerny. It is necessary to check those specimens from Japan again, but in that paper by Sasakawa & Ikeuchi (1982), the specific repositories of those specimens are not clear, mentioning only Hokkaido University, Meijo University, Kyushu University and Kyoto Prefectural University, and a recent look through several collections in Japan did not yield these specimens.
