Lectotype (Gibbs in Lagascalia 1: 58. 1971): [icon] " Lycopsis lato Plantaginis folio Italica " in Barrelier, Pl. Galliam: 16, t. 1026. 1714.

Current name: Echium plantagineum L. View in CoL ( Boraginaceae ).

Note: Lacaita (in J. Linn. Soc., Bot. 44: 420. 1919) discussed this name, and Qaiser (in Jafri & El-Gadi, Fl. Libya 68: 37. 1979) treated 191.14 (LINN) as the type. Perry & McNeill (in Taxon 36: 483-492. 1987) argued that the specimen should take precedence over the Barrelier plate, but the latter is original material for the name, and Gibbs’ choice has priority.
