Diagnosis. Nagiella inferior can be diagnosed by the whitish markings on both fore and hindwings. N. inferior is externally similar to N. quadrimaculalis (Kollar, 1844) in wing color and wing pattern elements, but can be distinguished by the relatively smaller wingspan and smaller white markings on the central fascia of both wings. The male genitalia of N. inferior are similar to those of N. quadrimaculalis but can be distinguished by the button-shaped gnathos and the slender fibula.
Description. Wingspan 18–20mm. Antennae filiform; frons broad, whitish; maxillary palpi minute, brownish; labial palpi long, about twice to eye diameter, 1 st segment whitish, 2 nd segment laterally dark brownish. Body white. Forewing dark brown or blackish in ground color; antemedial line light blackish, slanted, dorsally strongly curved toward dorsum; postmedial line light blackish, costally slanted outward, medially strongly incurved, dorsally meets antemedial line at dorsum; central fascia anteriorly black and white rectangular dots, posteriorly whitish large renal shaped dot, bordering with costal part of the postmedial line; subtermen dark brown; termen lined with yellowish white; fringe dark brown or blackish. Hindwing dark brown or blackish in ground color; postmedial line blackish, costally dentate, medially projected outward and incurved, dorsally transverse; central fascia anteriorly white and black rectangular dots, posteriorly large white dot that bordering with a postmedial line; subtermen dark brownish; termen lined with yellowish white; fringe blackish. Male genitalia. Uncus short, trapezoidal; gnathos stubby, button-shaped; juxta broad, simple; saccus triangular. Valva elongate, distally expanded and hairy; costa straight, medially concave; fibula small, hook-shape process directed ventrally; sacculus thin, basally bent. Aedeagus rod-shaped; cornutus absent, but weakly sclerotized on diverticulum. Female genitalia. Papillae anales simple, apex flat, hairy; posterior apophyses basally thicker, tapered distally, almost equal length to 8 th segment; anterior apophyses basally thicker, gradually tapered distally; ostium bursae simple, tube-like; ductus bursae long medially with ductus seminalis; corpus bursae ovate, signum a small sclerotized process.
Distribution. Russia (Siberia), Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, and South Korea
DNA barcoding: One specimen from South Korea ( OK501195 View Materials ) was sequenced. The intraspecific genetic variance in N. inferior was 2.0% (±1.7 SD), and the average genetic difference between N. inferior and its close relative, N. quadrimaculalis (Kollar) was 6.1%.
Remarks. The genus Nagiella comprises four species mainly from South and Southeast Asia and can be differentiated from its similar genera by its short and wide uncus, developed gnathos, broader valva with stout setae subapically, large oblique clasper, and absence of cornuti, as well as by the type of wing maculation (Lu and Du, 2020). The generic status of Nagiella compared with Patania Moore, 1888 is ambiguous ( Mally et al., 2019; Nuss et al., 2003 –2021). The South Korean specimens of N. inferior and N. quadrimaculalis showed the difference in the length and shape of gnathos, stout and button-like, compared with Chinese specimens (Lu and Du, 2020).
