Formerly included C. surinamensis which was transferred to Sorex araneus by Husson, 1963, Studies on the Fauna of Surinam and other Guyanas, 13:35- 37. Gureev, 1979:433-437, did not cite Choate (op. cit.), and recognized those species Choate considered synonyms. A key to the genus was published by Choate and Fleharty, 1974, Mamm. Species, 44:1-3.
