Genus Parathelphusa H. Milne Edwards, 1853 View in CoL

Type species. Type species Parathelphusa tridentata H. Milne Edwards, 1853 , subsequent designation by Rathbun (1905).

Remarks. A recent phylogeographic study of Parathelphusa by Klaus et al. (2013) showed that specimens of P. oxygona from Sarawak belonged to a distinct lineage. It also showed that species diversity of Parathelphusa crabs in Borneo is higher than what is known at present, with various un-named clades of Parathelphusa . This agrees with unpublished data that indicate that there are at least half a dozen new species from Borneo and Sumatra still awaiting description. There are also several genetic clades of Parathelphusa in Sumatra allied to P. maindroni that require study (S. Klaus, pers. comm.). Clearly the taxonomy of Parathelphusa of these two large Sundaic islands needs to be substantially revised using a combination of morphological and genetic tools. The unexpected diversity of these crabs means that any key to the Sumatran species would be premature at the present stage.
