Material. Cape Verdes: 3 ll, 32 1 9 to 97 1 25 mm, and 5 juveniles, 18 1 5 to 23 1 6 mm, Quebra Canhela , Ilha de Sa Äo Tiago, 30 December 1988, A. Brito .

Identi W cation. Miller and Smith (1989) recorded the occurrence of this common species along the continental coast north to Cape Verde in Senegal but no material from the Cape Verde archipelago was available to these authors. However, B. soporator was listed by Paes da Franca and Vasconcelos (1962) from Baia de Sal Rei, Ilha da Boa Vista, and Porto da Praia, Ilha de Sa Äo Tiago, and the species has been found during the present surveys in high shore pools; it could be confused with Gobius ateriformis sp. nov. described below.
