Material examined

Sinistral female and attached male from 23.8 mm carapace length female Galacantha diomedeae , from off Arica, Chile (18°28´30″ S, 70°18´52″ W), 400 m depth ( USNM 1125508 About USNM ) GoogleMaps .

Remarks

Pseudione galacanthae View in CoL has been reported infesting two galatheid species from North America ( Hansen 1897; Fraser 1932) and three from Patagonian waters ( Richardson 1904; Rayner 1935; in Table 1 only four hosts are listed because Galacantha diomedeae View in CoL hosts this parasite from both North and South American waters). It should be noted that this parasite has been found at the northernmost and southernmost ends of the distribution of G. diomedeae View in CoL (fide Macpherson 2007), which is unusual in that many parasites tend to occupy only a portion of their hosts’ ranges ( Pielou 1974). From the Patagonian region, the reported prevalence reached 7.4% (n = 5798) on Munida subrugosa View in CoL and 3.7% (n = 3369) on M. gregaria ( Rayner 1935) View in CoL .
