( Fig. 33 View FIGURES 28–42. 28–29 )
Leptostylus LeConte, 1852: 168 View in CoL .
Type species — Lamia aculifera Say, 1824 View in CoL (subsequent designation, Thomson, 1864: 28) [= Lamia transversa Gyllenhal, 1817 View in CoL ].
Diagnosis. Pronotum with protuberances; lateral tubercles of the prothorax median or on posterior third; elytra with setose granules, sometimes throughout. Problematic genus in need of full revision. Number of species currently included: 86; in Mexico and Central America : 51.
Remarks. Leptostylus and Leptostylopsis are very problematic and the separation between then is nearly impossible. The features pointed out to separate them are questionable, especially because Leptostylus includes species with characters extremely variable as, for example, the prothoracic shape, position and shape of the lateral tubercles of the prothorax, which may even be absent, distance between lower eye lobes frontally, etc. These differences suggest that Leptostylus is composed by more than one genus, which only makes more problematic the separation between it and Leptostylopsis . The characteristics pointed out by Dillon (1956a) to separate them thus become very questionable
