Modified parts to the key to the world species of Macropes in Slater (1979) View in CoL
Slater (1979) provided a most up-to-date key to the world species of Macropes , in which M. privus should be replaced by M. dentipes . We inserted the species of M. monticolus , M. robustus , and the three new species into the key of Slater (1979), and provided those parts of Slater’s (1979) key which need to be modified as follows.
Following the key to species of Macropes in Slater (1979) View in CoL to couplet 3a:
3a. Membrane with exception of veins uniformly pale or translucent throughout, or if slightly darkened then lacking a contrasting white opaque anterior area ......................................................................................................................... 4
4. Membrane of fore wing milky white, not markedly translucent; antennal segments 2 and 3 black or dark chocolate brown; male with a prominent “button-like” median protrusion on abdominal sternum 4; calli strongly pubescent ...................................................................................................................................... obnubilus (Distant) View in CoL ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 F)
4a. Membrane strongly translucent; antennal segments 2 and 3 brown, not black; no sternal protrusion on abdominal sternum 4; calli shining, nearly glabrous (except in pilosus) ................................................................................4-1
4-1. Clavus and distal 1/2 of corium except lateral margins dark brown.............................. peculiaris View in CoL sp. nov. ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 F)
4-1a. Distal 1/3 of corium usually testaceous, unicolorous with remainder of corium, or appearing somewhat infuscated (African).................................................................................................................................................................4-2
4-2. Posterolateral pronotal lobes strongly produced caudally, nearly attaining to the level of half of scutellum, to form a deeply concave posterior margin ............................................................................... complanus View in CoL sp. nov. ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 I)
4-2a. Posterolateral pronotal lobes not strongly produced caudally, remote from the level of half of scutellum, to form an evenly concave posterior margin ......................................................................................................................... 5
Following the key to species of Macropes in Slater (1979) View in CoL to couplet 12a:
12a. Antennal segment 4 less than twice length of antennal segment 2; pronotum appearing nearly parallel-sided from humeral angles to area of calli, or pronotum produced laterally anterior to transverse impression ...................12-1
12-1. Body robust, body length 3.9 times of humeral width; pronotum broad, flatten, usually produced laterally anterior to transverse impression, wider across calli than across humeri, with a shallow fovea in center of each callus ....... ............................................................................................................................. robustus Zheng and Zou View in CoL ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 D)
12-1a. Body slender, body length 4.2–5 times of humeral width; pronotum elongate and slightly convex, nearly parallelsided from humeral angles to area of calli, without any fovea in center of each callus ............................................. .................................................................................................. harringtonae Slater, Ashlock and Wilcox View in CoL ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 C)
Following the key to species of Macropes in Slater (1979) View in CoL to couplet 27:
27. Stout, robust species, body length less than 5 times humeral width; membrane with brown macula or patch distally or adjacent to distal 1/2 of apical corial margin; male with “button-like” protrusion mesally at least on abdominal sternum 4 (third visible).....................................................................................................................27-1
27-1. Larger, robust species (6.52); pronotum width across calli subequal to width across humeri; membrane reaching onto anterior 1/3 of 7th abdominal tergum; male with a “button-like” protrusion mesally only on sternum 4........... ...................................................................................................................................... burmanus Slater and Wilcox
27-1a. Smaller, less robust species (4.95); pronotum slightly wider across calli than across humeri; brachypterous, membrane reaching onto 4th abdominal tergum; male with a “button-like” protrusion mesally each on sterna 3, 4 and 5 ....................................................................................................................... monticolus Hsiao and Zheng View in CoL ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 E)
Following the key to species of Macropes in Slater (1979) View in CoL to couplet 32a:
32a. All tibiae testaceous, dark brown to black, unicolorous or nearly so with femora..............................................32-1
32-1. All legs bright light testaceous ........................................................................................ testaceus View in CoL sp. nov. ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 B)
32-1a. All legs dark brown to black (posterior tibiae sometimes lighter brown on distal 1/2) .........................................33
